For Immediate Release: April 9, 2020
This evening, the Washington D.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club announced their endorsement of Robert White for his 2020 re-election campaign and second term on the Council of the District of Columbia. The D.C. Chapter of the Sierra Club is the local branch of the nation’s largest environmental organization with over 10,000 members and supporters.
White said, “It is an honor to receive an endorsement from the Sierra Club. I am committed to working with the Sierra Club for another four years to advance more clean energy and other health and environmental initiatives. It is imperative that we address the urgent climate crisis and work deliberately to improve our air and water quality throughout the entire city. We will work together to create a better city for our residents and a more sustainable future for the next generations.”
As an At-Large member, White has consistently supported and championed pivotal environmental legislation, including co-introducing the Clean Energy DC Omnibus Act of 2018.
As Chair of the Committee on Facilities and Procurement, which has oversight over the Department of General Service (DGS), the District agency that oversees DC government construction, White introduced the Renewable Energy Future Act of 2019, which requires DGS to evaluate the viability of generating solar and wind energy generation on every District Government-owned facility.
White also recently introduced the Public Facilities Environmental Safety Amendment Act of 2020 to address the presence of lead and other health and environmental hazards in playgrounds, schools and government buildings undergoing modernization or demolition. The bill requires DGS to conduct lead testing on all District-owned and maintained synthetic playground surfaces, research alternative materials for future use on playground sites, and to assess environmental hazards near occupied government buildings.
In his leadership role as Chair of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government, White worked with Maryland and Virginia elected officials, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area to launch the most comprehensive cross-sector partnership for smart regional growth in the country. White expressed, “I continue to be excited about this partnership. I see a great opportunity to work collaboratively and innovatively to build a cleaner and more viable region.”
White has demonstrated a proven track record as an environmentalist.
This is White’s 7th major endorsement before the upcoming Primary Election on June 2nd.
